Hemp products help dogs

by Darren Handschuh

Dogs are eating up a new product from a North Okanagan company – literally.

True Leaf of Vernon, is marketing a line of hemp-based doggie chews that, the company says, offers a variety of benefits to the family dog.
Called True Love, True Spirit and True Calm chews, the company says the treats supply dogs with natural antioxidants and address joint pain and anxiety. The product attracted significant interest from collectives, pet stores and dog lovers at two recent trade shows and appears ready to fill a niche in the fast-growing “functional chew” category. The local brand will be for sale in stores by late October.

FBI: America is Arresting One Marijuana User Every Minute

Woman arrested

A marijuana user is being arrested every minute–more than a dozen will be taken to jail as I type this piece. This according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation which today released its annual Uniform Crime Reportaggregating law enforcement data and tallying the nation’s crimes and arrests in 2014. While murders, robberies, and burglaries dropped considerably, authorities across the country still apparently have an uncontrollable urge to arrest and prosecute nonviolent drug offenders.

The Nation’s First Marijuana “Resort” to Open in South Dakota

Talk about high profits.

American Indians have held a leading role in the casino industry since 1987, when the Supreme Court ruled that gambling could not be barred in their sovereign nations. But on one reservation in South Dakota, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Indian tribe is soon to open a new type of “adult playground”: a marijuana resort.

Set to begin selling its first joints on New Year’s Eve, the Associated Press reported Tuesday, the resort will grow its own marijuana and feature a smoking lounge with food and bar service, in addition to a nightclub. Santee Sioux leaders, including tribal president Anthony Reider, plan to eventually add slot machines and an outdoor music venue to the hotspot.

BY LINDSEY BARTLETT
Painting and smoking is a blast. From left to right, Kevin Pereira, Heidi Keyes and Margaret Cho.

Puff, Pass, and Paint, a private, cannabis-meets-cocktails-and-canvas class offered every weekend in Denver, often welcomes colorful guests. Comic Cho has done plenty of TV, from her guest contributions on Fashion Police to playing Kim Jong-Il on30 Rock; PysCho, her standup tour, came to Denver earlier in the year. Pereira has a cult following of his own, hosting one of the original gaming podcasts, Pointless Audio, under the pseudonym Captain Immy; he’s best known for his time spent as one of the hosts of G4’s Attack of the Show.

New laws hailed as huge boost for Tasmanian hemp growers

Mercury

Primary Industries Minister and Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff inspecting an industrial hemp crop at Kindred, near Devonport.

NEW laws to make it easier to grow industrial hemp have been hailed as a huge opportunity for Tasmanian farmers.

Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the Industrial Hemp Bill 2015, tabled in State Parliament today, would remove unnecessary red tape to encourage investment and create jobs.
The Bill supports the growth of the industrial hemp sector through simplified regulation of the industry.

As it stands, the existing regulation under poisons legislation is a barrier to industry growth.
“This Government has listened to the concerns of the industry,” Mr Rockliff said.
“This Bill will finally cut the unnecessary red tape and recognise industrial hemp is an agricultural crop, while not compromising law enforcement of illicit cannabis.”
The Bill will:

Establish robust and simple regulation, including streamlining the licensing under the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment rather than under the Poisons Act and Department of Health and Human Services;
Legislate to extend licencing from one year to five years to give farmers more certainty to grow the crop; and
Increase the allowable THC threshold from 0.35 per cent to 1.0 per cent to bring the state in line with New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT and allow for easier trade of material.

Bernie Sanders Seeks to End the Private Prison Racket

Bernie Sanders speaking in Arizona

The Drug War has been a failed disaster by any measure, destroying lives and bankrupting budgets across our great nation. The mass incarceration of nonviolent people for drugs has been a tragic epidemic that has disproportionately hurt people of color and citizens living in poverty. For far too long, politicians scored political points for being “tough on crime” and filling up prison cells. Filling up these prison cells became big business as private prisons became a powerful lobbying group working to continue failed Drug War policies, such as mandatory minimum sentences.
Fortunately, the need to reform our prison-industrial complex has become a moderate political position that candidates across political ideologies have begun to address. Bernie Sanders, who has surged in national and state polls against Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, has stepped out first with an important bill that seeks to end the private prison racket.
