Eat, drink more hemp seeds (yes, they’re legal)

Hemp milk one of the most nutritionally value-packed milk options

Author: Eatocracy Editors
(CNN) -In a post about eating more compassionately in the new year, Farm Sanctuary president Gene Baur extolled the virtues of replacing cow’s milk with an animal-friendly, non-dairy milk.
Among his replacement recommendations were the usual suspects – almond, soy, rice – but then he also mentioned a substitute a little more, shall we say, earthy.
While the perception of hemp leans, erroneously, more toward Cheech and Chong than one of undiluted health, hemp seeds are packed full of nutrition – and you should milk them for all they’re worth, says Happy Hemp owner Tara Miko Grayless.
Five Uses for Hemp Seeds: Tara Miko Grayless
1. A happy stand-out
“Hemp seeds are a flavorful seed similar to pine nuts. Just a sprinkle of hemp seeds elevates any meal to super food status. It adds nutty goodness and a healthy dose of protein, fiber and essential amino and heart healthy fatty acids.
Sprinkle this moist seed on to any salad, yogurt, or cereal, or enjoy this protein-packed snack on their own. Simple and easy.”
2. Got milk?
“Hemp milk is one of the most nutritionally value-packed milk options. Hemp milk is a great option for vegans, those who have allergens associated with whey protein or casein, or are lactose intolerant. Hemp milk is full of omega fatty acids, minerals, vitamins and protein – not to mention easy to make!”
Hemp Milk
1 cup hemp seeds
5 to 6 cups of water
Sweetener: honey or agave
Directions:
In a blender combine one cup of hemp seeds with five to six cups of water. Blend for two to three minutes until smooth. Use less water for a thicker option. Add sweetener to taste. Strain through a cheesecloth or strainer to remove seed particles. Keeps fresh for three days in the refrigerator. Great for coffee, cereal, or oatmeal.

AZ bill threatens medical marijuana college students

Warning Arizona college students, if you suffer from an illness and are prescribed medical marijuana, you may no longer have the right to receive an education. Despite the laws meant to protect those whom need treatments for aliments, AZ lawmakers want to prohibit students from receiving desired health care and an education at that same time.
Arizona state lawmakers passed a bill (HB 2349) to deny university, trade school and college students the right to use medical marijuana regardless of being a medically approved card holder. Not even a doctor’s note, recommendation or physician approved prescription can protect an individual student from harsh legal punishment for possessing their legal medication (marijuana).

Coffee Shop Confusion in the Netherlands

by JOHN SINCLAIR

Amsterdam.
New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam was even more festive than usual this season as thousands of European visitors flocked to the city to enjoy what they believed would be the last night they’d be welcome in the coffee shops of the Netherlands.
For several months, the reigning Dutch government had been trumpeting the imminent demise of the old coffee shop regime as of Jan. 1, 2012, and the mainstream media were only too eager to amplify the message.
Under the mandated new rules, all existing Dutch coffee shops would be converted to members-only clubs strictly limited to the patronage of Dutch citizens and registered expatriates, and the dreaded “drug tourists” from all over the world would be barred from entry.
But after the border city of Maastricht and other municipalities in Holland demanded that the government delay its plans for at least a year, Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten announced in November that the system won’t be introduced nationwide until 2013.

Roseanne is in. The comedian has filed papers to seek the Green Party’s nomination for president, reports TMZ, which says she’ll be pushing hard to legalize marijuana. Barr says the run is no joke, and she’s looking to capitalize on the Occupy Wall Street sentiment, notes AP. “The Democrats and Republicans have proven that they are servants—bought and paid for by the 1%—who are not doing what’s in the best interest of the American people,” she said in a statement.

Fabric choices impact the environment

By Taylor Hilsabeck
Clothing production has enormous environmental impacts.
Cotton, for example, is the world’s most polluting crop, responsible for 25 percent of all pesticide use in the world each year. Worker’s rights and animal welfare are also issues when deciding on green options in clothing.

Different fabrics have different impacts, depending on what their fiber content.
Nylon and Polyester
These energy-hungry synthetics are non-biodegradable as well as made from petrochemicals. Nylon manufacturing creates nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Polyester uses large amounts of water for cooling along with lubricants, which can become a source of contamination.
The Green Choice: Try shopping for recycled polyester instead. Patagonia has many options made from recycled drink bottles.
Cotton
Cotton is the most pesticide-intensive crop in the world. These chemicals typically remain in the fabric and are released during the lifetime of the garments.
The Green Choice: Purchase organic cotton instead. Organic cotton garments are free from chlorine bleaches and synthetic dyes. Blue Canoe, Gaiam and Xylem are just a few companies with fashionable, sustainable cotton fabrics.
Rayon
Rayon is an artificial fiber made from wood pulp which seems more sustainable at first glance. However, old growth forests are often cleared and subsistence farmers are sometimes displaced to make way for pulpwood plantations. To make rayon, the wood pulp is treated with hazardous chemicals such as caustic soda and sulphuric acid.
The Green Choice: Try clothing made from hemp or bamboo instead. Hemp is a thoroughly ecological crop; easy to cultivate and pest tolerant, it needs few or no agrochemicals. At the same time, hemp binds and enriches the soil with its deep roots. The Hempest and Soul-Flower are hemp clothing companies. Bamboo is the latest plant material to hit the eco-friendly fabrics market. Described as hypoallergenic, absorbent, fast-drying and naturally anti-bacterial. Element EcoWear is a company full of trendy, bamboo clothing as well as other sustainable fabrics.
