Former NFL offensive lineman Lomas Brown, an ESPN analyst, believes more than half of NFL players smoke marijuana.
Brown made his claim to the Detroit News on Friday.
He said that three marijuana-related arrests of Detroit Lions players this off-season are just examples of what is a widespread problem in the league.
“I just don’t think you’ll be able to curb this,” Brown told the newspaper.

George W. Bush Convicted of War Crimes, Can’t Leave U.S. Fearing Arrest

Kuala Lumpur — It’s official; George W Bush is a war criminal.
In what is the first ever conviction of its kind anywhere in the world, the former US President and seven key members of his administration were yesterday (Fri) found guilty of war crimes.
Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and their legal advisers Alberto Gonzales, David Addington, William Haynes, Jay Bybee and John Yoo were tried in absentia in Malaysia.
The trial held in Kuala Lumpur heard harrowing witness accounts from victims of torture who suffered at the hands of US soldiers and contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan.
They included testimony from British man Moazzam Begg, an ex-Guantanamo detainee and Iraqi woman Jameelah Abbas Hameedi who was tortured in the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
At the end of the week-long hearing, the five-panel tribunal unanimously delivered guilty verdicts against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their key legal advisors who were all convicted as war criminals for torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment.

Willie Nelson Says Pot Saved His Life

Willie-Nelson-1-2-fillmore.jpg

Willie Nelson at the Fillmore, January 2011.

Willie Nelson , king hippie of country music and walking THC repository, was recentlyasked  a question about legalizing marijuana. And guess what? He’s for it.

The fact that ol’ Willie thinks weed oughta be legal and taxed is about as surprising as hearing that Ted Nugent acquired his dinner with a firearm. But what was interesting in Nelson’s new interview  with the UK Guardian was what he said about the drug changing his life. Asked by writer Michael Hann about the hard-drinkin’ days before he was a stoner, Willie basically — not explicitly, but clearly enough — says that doobies saved his young, reckless self from an untimely departure.

Poll: Decriminalize Marijuana?

A bill floating in the state Assembly would do just that
By Charlie LaPlaca

A bill up for consideration by a state Assembly panel next week would decriminalize possession of less than 15 grams of marijuana.
The Assembly Judiciary Committee on Monday will review bipartisan legislation that would replace criminal penalties with fines for possession of enough marijuana for just less than 30 joints, according to a report  in today’s Star Ledger.
The state director of the Drug Policy Alliance told the newspaper that the bill is the farthest marijuana decriminalization has ever gotten in the state Legislature.

Charges against Rick Simpson withdrawn

Cannabis cruisader has been in Europe since 2009

AMHERST – A series of drug charges against an Athol man who says he’s exiled in Europe have been withdrawn.
Rickey Logan Simpson, 62, was charged with the production of cannabis marijuana, possession of cannabis marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cannabis marijuana and possession of cannabis resin following a raid of his Athol Road home in November 2009.
Simpson was in Amsterdam, Holland accepting the Freedom Fighter of the Year Award at the annual Cannabis Cup when the raid occurred and it’s believe he has been in Europe since then.
Crown attorney Doug Shatford said the court approved a forfeiture application against Simpson under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act last week. Once that occurred, he brought forward a motion to withdraw the charges against Simpson, who declared himself an exile in Europe after the 2009 raid.
“The application was made to forfeit the items that were seized in the raid and upon completion of that the decision was made to withdraw the charges,” Shatford said Friday.
Under the order, Simpson forfeits cannabis marijuana and resin seized in the raid along with growing equipment, marijuana plants and seeds, syringes, three crossbows and arrows, two pellet guns – including one with scope and suspected silencer, grow up materials, video equipment, books, documents and building materials.

Coffee-powered cannabis cars and bambara breakfasts on Plants Day

Fascination of Plants Day is a chance to celebrate plant scientists working to feed the world, improve health and develop sustainable energy supplies

Today is the first ever Fascination of Plants Day . The day’s festivities are aimed at raising awareness of the importance of plant science to the future of our food and energy supplies, and our health.
Public events are taking place in 39 countries and UK partners include the John Innes Centre, Rothamsted Research, Kew Gardens and Cardiff University. The latter has organised two days of research demonstrations, tours and exhibitions .
In honour of this special day, here’s my pick of some of the fascinating ways plant science is shaping our future.

On your plate

In a changing climate, securing our food supply will be a big challenge. Finding new staple foods will be a vital part of that. At the Crops For The Future Research Centre (CFFRC)  in Malaysia, scientists seek out local plant species that have the potential to become important global crops.
Right now, they’re particularity interested in the bambara groundnut . This is a legume grown by subsistence farmers in the drier parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The research centre has mapped the DNA of the plant and created a hybrid variety that should produce greater yields.
CEO Professor Sayed Azam Ali  believes bambara is “just the sort of climate-resilient, nutritious and potentially productive crop that should be a crop of the future.” His colleague, Dr Sean Mayes , adds that, “By learning what works – and what doesn’t – in a few exemplar crops [such as bambara] we can improve the chances of successful intervention with many other crops.”

In your car

Biodiesel is old news: sunflower, rapeseed and soybean oils have all been pressed into service as sources of automobile fuel. But how about coffee-fuelled cars? Zayed Al-Hamamre and colleagues at the University of Jordan think that spent coffee grounds – which typically contain about 10% oil – could be a novel source of biodiesel. They’re working on the best way to extract and process the oils in spent coffee grounds, andtheir latest results were published in a recent issue of the journal Fuel .
Under optimal conditions, Al-Hamamre argues, we could get around 1,000 tonnes of biodiesel from coffee grounds each year – without using up more precious arable land.
Those coffee-powered cars might once day be constructed fromCannabis sativa, also known as hemp. James Meredith  and his colleagues at Warwick University believe hemp fibre  could replace carbon fibre in automobile bodywork.
High-performance cars are constructed from carbon fibre composites, which are lightweight yet able to absorb high-energy impacts. But carbon fibres are energy-intensive to make, and so scientists are looking for natural replacements. Earlier this year, Meredith’s team reported  that hemp composite material performed as well as expensive carbon fibre composites in impact tests.
Hemp cars aren’t just a laboratory curiosity. Canadian company Motive Industries Inc  has created a prototype car built from hemp composites. They call it the Kestrel  and the designers are looking for manufacturers to get the vehicle into production.

Ray Kelly, Police Commissioner, Issues New Orders Which Likely Will Effect The Number of Stop and Frisks

By Graham Rayman

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly today issued two new department orders which could sharply effect the way police execute the stop and frisk program.
The orders come a day after a federal judge broadened a class action lawsuit filed to force the department to discontinue its stop and frisk campaign. The decision allows hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to seek legal recourse if they believe they were unlawfully stopped.
In her decision, U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin was critical of the police, writing that she was disturbed by the Bloomberg administration’s “deeply troubling apathy towards New Yorkers’ most fundamental constitutional rights.” She also said that the city had a “cavalier attitude,” and that “suspicionless stop should never occur.”
The first order essentially reemphasizes the department long-held position that racial profiling is prohibited and notes, “Members of the service are reminded that the NYPD is committed to the impartial enforcement of law and the protection of constitutional rights.”

DEA Wants To Scan All License Plates On Utah Interstate

The DEA Wants To Monitor I-15

in SW Utah For Drug Activity

Do you drive on Interstate 15 Utah? If so, your license plate may be scanned by the feds. Apparently, the DEA and some Utah sheriffs want to scan all the license plates on cars that drive along the ‘drug corridor.’ They feel that if they can compile the data, they can spot drug traffickers. The list of problems with this policy is growing exponentially.
According to The Salt Lake Tribune , Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups pointed out that, “It’s not against the law to drive down I-15 from Utah to Nevada to gamble, but there are a lot of Utahns that would be pretty embarrassed by that.” How would that look? A law abiding Utah citizen is traveling to Nevada for entertainment on a frequent basis, and they become a suspect in a drug investigation.
What about the people that drive along that corridor for work? Will there be some type of exemption process? How would the DEA and local law enforcement even keep up on such a thing? A person gets a new job, drives down I-15 for a week straight, then ends up on the DEA watch list. How is that an effective use of resources? It seems to me like this policy would harass far more law abiding citizens than it would catch drug runners.

Clinical Trials For Cannabis And Prostate Cancer Warranted

Barbula, Venezuela–(ENEWSPF)–May 17, 2012.  Plant cannabinoids possess analgesic and anti-cancer effects and ought to be assessed in patients with prostate cancer, according to a literature review  published in the Indian Journal of Urology.

A pair of investigators from Venezuela and the United States assessed the potential use of cannabis in the treatment of prostate cancer. They concluded: “Prostate cancer cells possess increased expression of both cannabinoid 1 and 2 receptors, and stimulation of these results in decrease in cell viability, increased apoptosis, and decreased androgen receptor expression and prostate-specific antigen excretion. … It is our conclusion that it would be of interest to conduct clinical trials involving medicinal cannabis or other cannabinoid agonists, comparing clinical markers such as PSA with controls, especially in men with bone metastatic prostate cancer, whom would not only benefit from the possible anti-androgenic effects of cannabinoids but also from analgesia of bone pain, improving quality of life, while reducing narcotic consumption and preventing opioid dependence.”

A chart showing the results of a poll asking if Americans want the federal government to stop raids targeting medical marijuana.

Americans think President Obama should leave states that have legalized medical marijuana alone, a new poll finds.
In survey of 1000 likely voters, Mason-Dixon Polling and Research found three-fourths of those polled believe President Obama should respect laws in states where growing and selling marijuana is legal for medical purposes. Fifteen percent of respondents favored enforcing federal law, under which medical marijuana use is illegal.
