The Australian Independents’ candidate for Fisher, Mark Maguire, says he hopes the commercial cultivation of hemp for manufacturing purposes will get the green light.
“We no longer have sugarcane,” Mr Maguire said. “Hemp is a sustainable industry. It can grow where sugarcane grows and provide longevity of employment.”

NSW committee recommends cannabis use be legalised for terminally ill

A NSW parliamentary committee has recommended that use of marijuana be legalised for medical purposes by people with cancer or AIDS, or other terminal illnesses.
If approved by the NSW government, patients with specific conditions, certified by their specialist doctor, would be allowed to possess and use up to 15 grams of dry cannabis.
The committee report, which included Liberal, National, Labor, Greens and Shooters party members, was unanimous, despite reservations being expressed by representatives of the departments of health and attorney-general and by police officers who gave evidence to the committee.
The committee’s chair, National party upper house member Sarah Mitchell, said it was preferable for patients with severe illness to have the benefit of cannabis through pharmaceutical products, but there was only one such product available, which was used to treat multiple sclerosis.

Study: Inhaled Cannabis Reduces Crohn’s Symptoms

Inhaling cannabis reduces symptoms of Crohn’s disease compared to placebo in patients non-responsive to traditional therapies, according to clinical trial datapublished online ahead of print in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Researchers at the Meir Medical Center, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Israel assessed the safety and efficacy of inhaled cannabis versus placebo in 21 subjects with Crohn’s disease who were nonresponsive to conventional treatments.
Eleven participants smoked standardized cannabis cigarettes containing 23 percent THC and 0.5 percent CBD (cannabidiol) twice daily over a period of eight weeks. The other ten subjects smoked placebo cigarettes containing no active cannabinoids.
Investigators reported, “Our data show that 8-weeks treatment with THC-rich cannabis, but not placebo, was associated with a significant decrease of 100 points in CDAI (Crohn’s Disease and activity index) scores.” (The CDIA is a research tool used to quantify the symptoms of Crohn’s disease patients.) Five of the eleven patients in the study group also reported achieving disease remission (defined as a reduction in patient CDAI score by more than 150 points).
Researchers also reported that “no significant side effects” were associated with cannabis inhalation. Subjects in the study group reported improvements in appetite and sleep compared to those in the placebo group. Cannabis inhalation was also associated with “significantly less pain” among the participants.

Doobie Don: state Senate candidate lights up in park

  • By Michael Macagnone

Don DeZarn smokes a joint at Veterans Park in Hamilton on Monday afternoon.

HAMILTON — Monday afternoon in Hamilton’s Veterans Park, Don DeZarn lit up a joint to protest the nation’s drug laws; he also wants to represent New Jersey’s 14th district in the state Senate.

DeZarn pulled the joint, which he said was marijuana, out of his sock after speaking to reporters for 15 minutes on his views on drug laws, property taxes, school choice and open government.

He was aware of the illegality; in the press release announcing the bit of civil disobedience, he said “Yes, I will be firing one up in public. Hopefully you will be able to run a story on Tuesday titled ‘State Senate candidate arrested at press conference.’”

No police officers showed up, but DeZarn spoke about his views on the drug, which he thinks should be legalized and regulated in the same way that alcohol and cigarettes are.

This Mother’s Day, Moms, Cops and Docs Call To End the Drug War

This Mother’s Day, Moms, Cops and Docs Call To End the Drug War

During my time as a criminal justice professional, I was reminded to adopt strategies that helped my agency to be more effective. A term we adopted is a military expression called a “force multiplier” which is “a factor that dramatically increases (hence “multiplies”) the effectiveness of an item or group.” During my journey through activism I have met an unlikely group of women who have helped forge many changes not just in California, but across our nation. These women are “force multipliers” providing a voice for the voiceless. They are mothers like I am, and they share my grief of having their families suffer the collateral consequences of the Drug War. Through their loved one’s death, addiction or incarceration they have lived through what I have. This compounded grief has helped to form effective coalitions that result in action making our nation a better place.

NYC Marijuana Arrests Are Falling Because NYPD Is Focusing on "Serious" Drugs

So Ray Kelly wasn’t full of shit.
In March, the NYPD Commissioner reported that marijuana-related arrests had fallen in the city. Now, the New York Post has information to confirm Kelly’s statement. Data shows that arrests for possession of marijuana have dropped by 20 to 30 percent in New York City this year, and police are admitting that they’re falling back on weed busts to focus on more harmful drugs.
The data comes courtesy of the State Division of Criminal Justice Services. A reported 10,078 people were arrested for marijuana possession in New York City through Apr. 23; that number is down 20 percent from 2012, which experienced a 22 percent drop from 2011. A source reportedly told the Post that police are being told to “just focus on pills and cocaine.”

Vermont’s Legislature Just Voted to Decriminalize Marijuana

Community College of Vermont / photo on flickr

The Vermont House approved Senate changes to a marijuana decriminailzation bill this morning. The bill now goes to Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin. According to a Marijuana Policy Project press release, Shumlin will likely sign it “in the coming weeks.”
The whole process took a little over two months. Vermont’s marijuana decriminalization bills–H.200 in the House and S.48 in the Senate–were introduced the first week of February. The Vermont House first approved the bill on April 16, the Senate approved it and returned it to the House last week. Today the House approved changes to the bill. Now it goes to Shumlin.
Here’s what the legislation does, per MPP:

“[The bill] will remove criminal penalties for possession of up to one ounce of marijuana and replace them with a civil fine, similar to a traffic ticket. Those under age 21 would be required to undergo substance abuse screening. Under current state law, possession of up to two ounces of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail for a first offense and up to two years in jail for a subsequent offense.
