Stop the NFL’s War on Weed

When the Baltimore Ravens face the Cleveland Browns in Week Three of the football season, Ray Rice will be on the field. Josh Gordon will not.

Welcome to “integrity” and “values,” brought to you by the National Football League.

The NFL upheld Gordon’s yearlong suspension today for violating its substance-abuse policy after testing positive for marijuana, theminimum punishment for a repeat offender.

Meanwhile, the league, the Ravens and their fans have gone out of their way to justify the lenient two-game suspension given to Rice for knocking out his wife and dragging her unconscious body from an elevator. For weeks, we’ve had to endure countless accounts of what aswell guy Rice is when he isn’t beating a woman senseless.

Welcome to the NFL, where pot is worse than assault.

A number of studies have shown that cannabis functions in many ways that are beneficial to those with ALS, from serving as an analgesic to acting as a soothing muscle relaxant. Cannabis also functions as a saliva reducer, and so it has the ability to reduce symptoms of uncontrollable drooling that is common among those with ALS. Additionally, cannabis has been found successful in use as an antidepressant, results which have also been confirmed by an anonymous, self-reported survey of ALS patients conducted by the the MDA/ALS Center at the University of Washington.

Ending Medical Marijuana Prohibition Could Prevent Thousands of Prescription Drug Overdoses

By Max Cherney

An end to the prohibition of medical marijuana in the US might prevent tens of thousands of deaths every year from prescription drug overdoses, new research suggests.

In states that have decriminalized medical weed, an average of 25 percent fewer people are dying from overdoses of opioid analgesics each year compared to the nation as a whole, according to a scientific paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine. That is 1,729 less deaths than expected for every state that had legalized medical marijuana in 2010, the study’s final year.

How to keep those school lunches — and your kitchen — plastic-free

By  | Shine On
An Abeego sheet.

With September just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about packing school lunches again.

And if you’re attempting to keep your kitchen — and kids’ lunches — plastic-wrap-free, Calgary native Toni Desrosiers has a solution for you: reusable, eco-friendly food wraps.

Desrosiers, 35, founded her company, Abeego, with her husband, Colin, in 2008.
“I’ve always been innovative in my own life by solving particular things that I need personally, so that’s really how Abeego began,” she tells The Globe and Mail.
“I was unhappy with plastic food wrap and packaging as it was available on the market. We’ve used natural materials to store food for thousands of years so I wanted to uncover techniques from the past to store food and invent something that was going to suit a modern-day need.”
Desrosiers used her background in holistic nutrition to her advantage and started researching the history of food preservation. Her miracle solution to replace plastic-wrap: beeswax.
According to Abeego’s official site:
“Abeego products are made from hemp and certified organic cotton that’s been infused with pure beeswax, certified organize jojoba oil, and tree resin. These high-quality materials have natural anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties that work to create a protective material that allows food to breathe.

Review: Purggo bamboo charcoal air purifier for the car

Derek Markham (@derekmarkham)

Instead of using one of those scented car air fresheners chock full of phthalates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), consider an all natural version, which uses bamboo charcoal to eliminate odors.

If you’re a tidy single person with no pets, your car may stay as fresh and clean smelling as the day you bought it, but if you’re like many of us, with kids and dogs, your car might smell rather funky.

In order to deal with those odors, the standard practice is to buy one of the cheap scented air fresheners and hang it from the mirror, but unfortunately, those won’t get rid of the smells. They will, however, cover up some of the odors by masking them in potentially harmful fragrances (which have been linked to increased asthma risks), which include undesirable ingredients such as phthalates (hormone disruptors linked to an increased risk of birth defects and reproductive system abnormalities).
