Got PMS? Soon your doctor might write a Rx for weed

by Taryn Hillin

Centuries ago, women used to rely on cannabis to combat everything from cramps to swollen breasts—but can these remedies be applied today?
As more states move to legalize marijuana, more people are beginning to think creatively about how pot can improve our everyday lives. And while the drug’s potential to spice up women’s sex lives has been well-documented, medical professionals are only starting to look at how cannabis could benefit women in other intimate ways.
Some “green doctors” have already begun to recommend cannabis for period-related issues—in California, for example, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), an extreme form of PMS, is listed as a qualifying condition for a medical marijuana card.

Denver activists campaign to allow cannabis consumption in bars

Associated Press in Denver
A woman blows smoke rings with marijuana smoke during a rally at the Civic Center in Denver, Colorado, last year.

A campaign is under way to ask Denver voters about allowing marijuana consumption in bars and other places that only allow people over 21.
Activists who campaigned for recreational pot legalisation in Colorado have launched a petition drive to allow what they call “limited social marijuana consumption” at bars. The activists need about 5,000 signatures to get the question on November ballots.
It would allow bars or clubs to allow marijuana use as long as patrons bring their own weed and comply with clean-air laws. That means the pot they consume would have to be edible, or if smoked, consumed on an outside patio, matching the way cigarette smoking is regulated now. Outdoor smoking sites would have to be shielded from public view.

Preaching the miracles of hemp

Greg Flavall says the inner woody core of hemp makes great mulch, especially between vegetables like this broccoli.

“Russell has another use for the woody material. “I have been doing trials and research into using it as a bio-filter to take smells out of the air.”
His cousin has a bach up the Mokau River at Awakau where there was a family gathering in summer. “I predicted the long drop might be a bit smelly and my daughter is a bit precious.”
So he took a bale of hemp mulch with him and when he opened the door of the outside loo Russell knew he’d done the right thing. “The blowflies nearly chased me out. The smell… it was not pretty.”
He dumped the hemp into the hole and within minutes there was no smell. “All the ladies, seven or eight of them, all used it and were quite happy, so I was pretty chuffed that day.
“A few months later there was still no smell. It was just incredible.”
