Medical Schools Need Better Cannabis Education

A new study published in the online journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence found that “medical education needs to catch up to marijuana legislation.” While medical marijuana is now legal in 29 states and Washington D.C. for various ailments, it appears that medical schools have not quite caught on to the trend.
“As a future physician, it worries me,” said the study’s first author Anastasia Evanoff, who is a third-year medical student. She continued, “We need to know how to answer questions about medical marijuana’s risks and benefits, but there is a fundamental mismatch between state laws involving marijuana and the education physicians-in-training receive at medical schools throughout the country.”

When you hear “green industry,” you probably think of the current field that you are in and all that pertains to it, but the phrase can also refer to the booming interest in growing marijuana as more states legalize its medicinal and/or recreational use.
While most individuals are happy to go to a marijuana dispensary to get a pick-me-up of pot, there are those who would like to grow their own.

Arkansas Medical Cannabis Program Turnaround

Just over a month ago, Arkansas’ medical cannabis program looked to be in serious trouble – how things have changed over the last couple of weeks.
In August, we reported at that point in time there were no applications lodged for growing or dispensing medicinal cannabis in the state and patient registration was less than stellar.
By late August, only two submissions had been received for cultivation.
The pace picked up dramatically recently, particularly in the final days. The number of applications for cultivation has gone from zero to 98 and from zilch to 224 for dispensing according to the editor of Arkansas Business, Gwen Moritz.

High hopes for hemp seed solution to Williamtown contamination

The University of Newcastle, Australia

University of Newcastle researchers believe hemp seed might provide a real solution to the Williamtown contamination crisis.
Chemicals from firefighting foams historically used on the RAAF base have been discovered in high concentration in the local environment, including in groundwater, surface water and soils.
Researchers at the prestigious Centre of Excellence for Geotechnical Science and Engineering, based at the University of Newcastle, have shown hemp seed constituents to be highly effective in removing per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water.

A powder made from industrial hemp seed has been found to be very effective in removing particularly problematic toxins from water.
Chemicals contained in foams used for fire-fighting at some Royal Australian Air Force bases has left a nasty legacy –  per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminating wetlands and water supplies. Some of these PFAS compounds have been found to be toxic in laboratory animals, which means they may also affect fish and other aquatic animals.
