At the Cannabis Supper Club

By Christian Bordal

Since prop 64 passed in November, marijuana is in the air… and in the food. On Monday night the restaurant 51 Tavern in Highland Park hosted a cannabis supper club. It was the first in a series called The Gathering.
For $250, diners were treated to a five-course menu put together by celebrity chefs Sevan Abdessian and Kris Morningstar. And every course had some form of marijuana as an ingredient.
This was not your college buddy’s pot brownies: just check out the menu.

Nevada to Proceed With July Cannabis Sales Despite White House Warning

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Nevada still plans to launch recreational marijuana sales in July despite warnings this week of a federal crackdown by the administration of President Donald Trump, state officials said Friday.
Marijuana possession and sales are illegal under federal law, but Nevada voters decided in November to allow people age 21 or older to use cannabis recreationally — becoming one of eight states to do so.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Thursday that the United States Justice Department will step up enforcement of federal laws prohibiting recreational — not medical — marijuana. No immediate action accompanied the statement, which came in response to a reporter’s question.

That has not prompted the Nevada agency tasked with crafting rules governing recreational marijuana sales to change its timeline for ensuring dispensaries can open this summer, said agency spokeswoman Stephanie Klapstein.
“As of now, the Department of Taxation is moving forward with our regulation development as planned,” she said.

State Rep. Knute Buehler, R-Bend, in a prepared statement Friday said federal authorities need to back off any intent to tamper with legal marijuana in Oregon.

“I hope the new President and Attorney General keep their hands off Oregon’s marijuana law,” Buehler stated in a news release. “They should respect the will of the voters and honor state’s rights. Federal intervention will only make a legal market a black market once again.”

Texas father risks freedom to promote cannabis treatments for his daughter

Marie Saavedra, KENS

A few times a month, Mark Zartler commits a crime that helps his daughter who cannot help herself.
17 years ago, Christy Zartler gave birth to twin girls.
“When they came home, Keeley, her twin, came home first,” said Christy. “Three days Kara followed her.”
From there, they began the difficult, years-long task of learning how to treat Kara’s Cerebral Palsy and severe Autism. There are a slew of her pills on their kitchen counter. Antipsychotics and enzymes and sleep aids. Still, few things helped fight off the worst of her symptoms.
Kara is self-injurious. She often hits and punches herself in episodes that can sometimes go on for hours.
“Pretty much on a daily basis we have some sort of episode,” said Christy.
So, when Mark found the one thing that could stop his daughter, he made a video to show the world. He posted it on his Facebook page. In it, Kara is seen punching herself at home. Mark then is able to put a mask over her nose, filled with vaporized cannabis. It takes six deep breaths, and she starts to calm down. He then holds her hands down for the next three minutes, and after that time, she sits calmly by herself, no longer violent.
“The video is the truth,” said Mark. “That’s typical of what we see.”
A neighbor first suggested years ago that cannabis could ease Kara’s symptoms. Mark then found that by grinding marijuana buds, and heating them to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, it created the vapor that serves as an immediate rescue response to his daughter’s most violent behavior.

As Cannabis Laws Loosen, Baby Boomers Come Aboard

It should come as no surprise that the fastest-growing group of cannabis consumers in Washington state and other parts of the U.S. are baby boomers. Many boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, smoked weed in their 20s, but stopped as public opinion swayed toward the “Just Say No” attitudes of the ’80s. Now, as they reach retirement and have much less to lose, many are turning back to cannabis.
A Johns Hopkins/Temple University paper recently reported a “significant” surge in cannabis usage among older people nationwide. Researchers found a 450 percent increase for people 50 to 64, a 333 percent increase for people 65 and over. According to the paper, Washington’s senior usage is slightly higher than the country’s average.

How Cannabis Helped Shape the United States of America

By MassCentral
Hemp America

In America, cannabis is only just starting to get recognized as a plant that can heal. However, America was built on cannabis, or hemp, and even in the black market, cannabis managed to do a lot of good. Here are just a few ways that cannabis helped to shape America.
Today when we think of hemp, we probably think of necklaces and clothing worn by hippies and cannabis enthusiasts. However, hemp is so much more. It was one of the major cash crops in early America, along with other items like peanuts and cotton. In fact, it wasn’t until the Reefer Madness scare, that hemp was no longer considered as a valuable commodity. Now that cannabis is getting decriminalized, hemp is coming back and showing all it’s great potential.
In fact, hemp was used to make a lot of essential items in olden times, such as the paper (the Declaration of Independence and Constitution are written on hemp), rope, clothing and food. At the time, hemp just made sense as one of the best crops to cultivate. It wasn’t until cannabis became demonized that people decided it was taboo to use hemp for fiber.

It’s been just more than four years since Colorado voted to legalize recreational marijuana for people older than 21. Now, one Colorado business wants to make buying pot as seamless as ordering a burger.
The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reported that the Parachute, Colorado, Board of Trustees voted Thursday to approve a business license for Tumbleweed Express, which is owned by Green Cross Colorado, LLC. Tumbleweed is scheduled to open in March in what used to be a car wash.
Tumbleweed Express will become the first drive-thru marijuana dispensary in the state of Colorado.

Ruth Brunn finally said yes to marijuana. She is 98.

She pops a green pill filled with cannabis oil into her mouth with a sip of vitamin water. Then Ms. Brunn, who has neuropathy, settles back in her wheelchair and waits for the jabbing pain in her shoulders, arms and hands to ebb.

“I don’t feel high or stoned,” she said. “All I know is I feel better when I take this.”
